And I don't mean cheesy because it was made in the 80s. To get a better idea of what I mean, here's my list:
Girls Just Want to Have Fun (Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt always seem to forget this one when listing filmographies...)
Grease 2 (ditto the above for Michelle Pfieffer and this little gem)
The Pirate Movie (Kristy McNichol and the guy from The Blue Lagoon were in this hilarious takeoff of The Pirates of Penzance)
If you've seen any of these, and love them, now you know what I mean. Bring em on!

Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Fri, December 23, 2005 - 12:37 PMYou mean like
One Crazy Summer (John Cusack and Bobcat Goldwaith in a sequel-of-sorts to Better Off Dead)
or
Three O'Clock High (People you've never heard of, for the most part, retelling High Noon in a high school setting)
How about The Heavenly Kid (More people you never heard of, this one a greaser kid from the 50s dies too early, and is sent back to Earth to show his kid how to be popular in the 80s)
'Zat the kind of thing you speak of?
(This pensieve idea better work out.)

Thu, January 19, 2006 - 1:02 AMEarth Girls Are Easy, that deserves the opening post. That or Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
I still have dreams about Gina Davis in that bikini. And later with that bow and arrow. But definitely not in that presidential role. :)

Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 10:36 AMYou'll never believe it - guess what I found at the grocery store on DVD?
XANADU!!!!!
The king of 80s spectacle! Love that soundtrack. One of my favorite movies ever. It is a block of sharp cheddar, and yet inexplicably I love it. -
-
Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 10:57 AMXanadu - I just saw that last summer, and what blew me away was how much of the 80s they predicted: From New Wave to Hair Metal, all of it was represented in Xanadu.
Can't Buy Me Love - Never saw it, but loved the other Patrick Dempsey thing from the 80s, In The Mood.
Other stuff: My Science Project, Real Genius, Back to the Beach
-
-
Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie

-
Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 10:20 PMI agree Dina. Valley Girl wasn't cheesy. But Mannequin & Weekend at Bernie's? huge globby pieces o' cheese! -
-
Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 11:58 PMMannequin...wow...I forgot about that...
I loved Flash Gordon when I was a kid, and that really cheesy music that went with it...I rewatched it not too terribly long ago, and groaned the whole way...
I also loved Conan the Destroyer, the sequel, which just wasn't as good as Conan the Barbarian...(yes, we loved them, but they were cheesy....)
Monster Squad (starring Ryan from Kids InCorporated)
Satisfaction (I think this one is HIGH on the list, but I love it anyway...it's so bad! I think Julia Roberts had 3rd billing below Justine Batemen)
Teen Wolf and Teen Wolf Too
-
-
Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Wed, December 28, 2005 - 12:54 AMKids, InCorporated...holy cats.
Fright Night had debatable cheese factor, but I associate it with this time frame.
All right, does anyone remember Explorers? Very young River Phoenix, and Wil Wheaton (though I might be wrong about WW), as kids who turn a tilt-a-whirl into a spaceship.
Or, Barry Gordy's The Last Dragon? Short Circuit? Soul Man? Turk 187? Cloak & Dagger? The Manhattan Project...
Look, I was raised by HBO and Cinemax, all right? (and there's still one that's eluding me right now, and it's not the Money Pit. Nor Batteries* (*not included). )
I don't mean to be a hog, sorry. -

Wed, December 28, 2005 - 9:29 AMI guess cheese is defined by the viewer! Definitely cheesy to me... -
-
Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Wed, December 28, 2005 - 10:49 AMI TOTALLy remember Exploreres..in fact, I had it on VHS...all the others listed, as well....
we rented lots of videos while I was growing up, had to two vcr's, and I often retapped a lot of what we rented....
Cloak and Dagger was great...
Now Fright Night was cheesy, but I totally loved it and thought it was actually a good scary movie for awhile...
(oh, and I still have it on VHS, too!)

My Bodyguard
Body Double
Gothic
-

Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Wed, December 28, 2005 - 1:44 PMNina, thank you!
Body Double's a twisted favorite of mine, with Melanie Griffith, who was in another twisted favorite of mine: Something Wild *which* I put in the same group as After Hours, which is the movie that's been eluding me.
*phew*
Nico, I had the damn movie memorized at one point. ("Do you even know what a plethora is?" No, El Guapo. "HOW CAN YOU TELL ME I HAVE A PLETHORA, WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS?!?")

Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie

Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 6:43 AMThey showed "Satisfaction" on TV once, but changed the title. As if we would have forgotten... "Oh, this must be a DIFFERENT movie with Justine Bateman singing horribly, and with Julia Roberts as a drummer.

Re: Favorite CHEESY 80s movie
Thu, December 29, 2005 - 9:15 AMoh no no NO, John candy is one of the most underrated actors!!!! Okay, so most of his movies did not show him at his best, but I won't have him put firmly in the cheese category... Planes, Trains and Automobiles was fricking great, and his small role in JFK (his last role, I think -- oh, maybe besides Wagons East) was absolutely chilling. Watching that short scene of him sweating in the restaurant shows what MIGHT HAVE BEEN.
Long Live the John Candy Appreciation Society!!

Thu, January 5, 2006 - 12:05 AMSummer School is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. The scene with the substitute teacher (Eliza Jane from Little House on the Prarie, incidentally) and the Texas Chainsaw Classroom Massacre practical joke was the absolute best. Tears-streaming-down-my-face funny.
